Sabbagh-Pickens Realty sponsored Community Safety Event in the St. Thomas parking lot

Walter Wangerin, Jr. will be a featured guest of the Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library in their Indiana Authors Showcase at 2:00 p.m. at the Wayne County Branch Library, 198 Girls School Road, Indianapolis.

Wangerin will be reading from his new novel, The Crying for a Vision, and discussing his life-changing experiences with the Lakota people of Rosebud Reservation, South Dakota, which inspired the novel. The presentation will be followed by a time for audience questions and discussion and a book-signing.

Night at the Opera, a benefit performance for Middle Way House, at the IU Foundation. The evening features a silent auction, performance and dinner. Call Middle Way House for more information.

Sunday Church School at 9:45 a.m.

All children in grades K-6 are invited to come and join us for Children's Choir. We rehearse the 1st and 2nd Sundays of the month from 9:00 to 9:40 a.m. in Heritage Hall. We sing on the 3rd Sunday of the month at the 11:00 a.m. service. Rehearsals include singing, games led by our Junior leaders (5th and 6th graders), and learning about God's love for us and our response to that love. Join us on September 7 at 9:00 a.m. for a mystery scavenger hunt.

Parents of confirmation students (7th, 8th, and 9th graders) please meet with Pastor Joyce and Frank Nierzwicki this morning at 9:45 in the Youth House to set the schedule for confirmation classes and for confirmation of 9th grade students.

Adult Forum general session meets this morning (9:45 a.m.). There will be a discussion of plans for this semester. Coffee cake will be served. Regular sessions will begin on September 14th.

On Thursday evening September 11, Lutheran Campus Ministry will participate in a Candlelight Service to commemorate the tragedy from September 11, 2001. The Service begins at 8:00 p.m. at Dunn Meadow, with music, prayers, and readings. Many major world religions will participate. Groups from all over campus will walk with candles to the Service. Please come and join us for the candlelight procession. We're meeting at 7:40 p.m. at Sample Gates (east end of Kirkwood). We'll provide candles. If you can't make the procession, it's perfectly okay to just show up for the Service.

BMDG Coffee Hour at 8:00 p.m. at the IU International Center at 111 North Jordan. The guest speaker is Rebecca Jimenez, pastor at the Center for University Ministry.

Rev. Rebecca Jimenez is the campus minister of the Center for University Ministry at IU. She has been at the Center since July 1999. A native of Indiana, she has lived in Mexico and Puerto Rico, and has relocated to Bloomington from New Jersey, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts from William Paterson University and a Master of Divinity from The Theological School of Drew University. Since her ordination by the American Baptist Churches/USA in 1996, Rebecca Jimenez has served as Campus Minister at Saint Peter's College, a Jesuit institution in Jersey City, and as Interim Associate at her home church, Emmanuel Baptist, Ridgewood, NJ. Her interests include process, feminist and liberation theologies, Latin America, women's issues, and the "search for God in all things."

The title of Rebecca Jimenez's talk will be "Challenges that we face after September 11".

The Hoosier Hills Bike Tour holds its 26th annual ride to benefit the Family Service Association and Court Appointed Special Advocates. Riders age 12 and above may ride a hilly loop of 12, 36, or 65 miles through Monroe and Lawrence County. Registration forms are available at area bike shops or on the web.

On Wednesday evenings, LCM students meet at the Rose House for Mid Week Worship and Bible Study. We'll begin this year with a study of the prophet Jonah. (Our bible study gets pretty adventurous, believe it or not).

The Rev. Gemechis Desta Buba is the featured speaker Aug. 24, Sept. 28 and Nov. 2 on "Day 1," a nationally broadcast radio program. Buba is pastor of Oromo Evangelical Lutheran Church, Atlanta, a congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. The broadcast may be heard locally on WKLU (101.9 FM) from Indianapolis/Brownsburg at 6:30 a.m.
