IU Library Media Services will screen the award-winning documentary, Trembling Before G-D on Thursday, April 22, 2004. The film shatters assumptions about faith, sexuality, and religious fundamentalism as intimately told by Hasidic and Orthodox Jews who are gay or lesbian and their dilemma to reconcile their passionate love of Judaism and the Divine with the drastic Biblical prohibitions that forbid homosexuality. The film was a winner of the GLAAD Media Award for outstanding documentary, a winner of the TEDDY Award and an Official Selection at the Sundance Film Festival.

Noa Wahrman, Bibliographer for Jewish Studies, will lead a discussion immediately following the screening about issues raised in the film.

The screening and discussion are free and open to the public and will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the Media Showing Room, Main Library E174. Refreshments will be provided.

The last BMDG coffee hour of the Spring term will be on Sufism. Sufism (tasawwuf) is the path followed by Sufis (adherents of Islamic mysticism) to reach the Truth/God/Allah. In the coffee hour, Dr Frances Trix, a practising Sufi, is going to share with us her experience with her Sufi master.

Dr. Frances Trix is a linguistic anthropologist specializing in discourseanalysis of face-to-face interaction. She has degrees in Near Eastern Languages & Literature (BA, MA) and in Linguistics (MA), as well as a PhD in Linguistics, all from the University of Michigan. Her research has focused on transmission of spiritual knowledge, oral tradition, and language reform in Muslim communities in the United States, and Muslim communities in the Balkans. She is the author of Spiritual Discourse: Learning with an Islamic Master (University of Pennsylvania, 1993), which is based on over twenty years study with Baba Rexhep, an Albanian Bektashi Baba, in his community. Currently she is Associate Professor of Anthropology at Wayne State University in Detroit.

"Sufism: Learning with a Sufi Master" will take place at 8:00 p.m. in President's Room of the University Club at the Indiana Memorial Union, 900 E.7th St. Tea and delicious, home-made food will be served after the talk.

This controversial film provides the opportunity for a discussion that touches deeply troubling historical and theological issues affecting the relationship between Christians and Jews. A reception will follow.

The Retired's Group will meet for dinner at Ryan's Steak House at 6:00 p.m. and then will join the community of our friends at Congregation Beth Shalom for the discussion. Contact the Warners if you have questions.
