BREAD FOR THE WORLD OFFERING OF LETTERS
Bread for the world is a hunger organization that uses taxpayer dollars and the US government to help world hunger. Each year this organization has an "Offering of Letters" campaign where people are urged to write to their congresspersons to support legislation to reduce world hunger. This year's Offering of Letters is for a piece of legislation called The Millennium Challenge. It is an assistance program aimed at reducing poverty in the world's poorest countries. There are many other involved churches in Bloomington.

Today there will be temple talks and an offering of letters between services, in the narthex.

BMDG's monthly discussion, an Open Discussion on Islam, will take place from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. in Room 1A of the Monroe County Library.

Together we will look for answers to the following common questions:

How can we reconcile the absolute power of God/Allah with human free will? They always seem to be limiting, if not contradicting each other.

Are we really free to do what we want to do? If so, how is God/Allah's power absolute then?

If God/Allah knows everything including our destiny why did He set us free to choose what we want to do? What is the point in having free will?

and even more questions to that effect...

We will discuss the questions from an Islamic point of view, but we are expecting contributions from other perspectives.

Our Thanks to Rita Pavolka, serving as organist this morning while Michael Bennett is away. Thanks also to Dave Pavolka for the special musical offering in today's Services.

Thanks to Ellen Mills for her report to the congregation at both services on the Indiana-Kentucky Synod Assembly held May 14 to 16.

Another report, much too long to be read during the service, is also available.

A Thank-You Breakfast for all Sunday Church School teachers and volunteers and their families will be held at 8:45 a.m. Please RSVP to Sandy Arnold.

Those who wish to become members of St. Thomas are invited to attend an orientation to the congregation at 9:45 a.m. Most of those who have expressed an interest in joining the congregation recently are doing so by transfer from another Lutheran congregation (or a congregation of a denomination with which we are in full communion). Hence we are holding this single introductory class. Through consultation with Pastor Lyle, members may also be received by affirmation of faith from other Christian denominations.

Acolyte Training at 12:30 p.m. will be offered for all First Communicants and a refresher course for those who currently serving or who have been trained and not currently in service.

Serving as an acolyte during the worship is a very important duty for all 5th through 8th grade students. Please pick up your copy of Accolades for Acolytes in the Church Office and read through the brochure prior to the training.

If you cannot be in attendance, please let Pastor Lyle or the Church Office know. Lunch — pizza — will be provided.

Youth Group meet at church at 5:30 p.m. to discuss a whitewater rafting trip, possibly the weekend of July 31 — please check your summer schedules! Then on to Pizza Hut at 6:00 p.m. (no cost), and over to Putt-Putt (bring $3), ending at 7:00 p.m.

The Retired Group invites MEMBERS and FRIENDS of ST. THOMAS to join them on Sunday May 23 for lunch and a tour of the former Canada House and Grounds. After the 2nd service we will lunch at the New China Buffet at 2616 E Third and then tour the Canada House. For more information call the Burts or Warners by MAY 20.
