Bloomington Muslim Dialog Group Panel Discussion at 8:30 p.m. in
the President's Room of University Club, Indiana Memorial Union, 900
E.7th St.
The BMDG will be discussing a very fundamental question
of the humanity with three guest speakers from different backgrounds:
What is human being? How do we define ourselves? Who are we? What
makes us human?
Our panel speakers will be St. John Wendell, Amr Sabry and Hilmi Demir, who will be respectively analyzing the notion of human being from a Christian's, from a Muslim's and from a philosophical perspective.
St. John Wendell was born and raised in Illinois (USA), and received his bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Illinois. He taught German and English in a Chicago high school before teaching children who were educable mentally handicapped. St. John was a member of an ecumenical religious order for 25 years, and for this reason, he spent ten years in Germany and fifteen years in Japan. He and his wife have lived in Bloomington since 1994 where their three grown children and their families also live.
Amr Sabry was born in Egypt in 1964. He spent his school years in France, Algeria, and Egypt, eventually receiving a B.Sc., M.Sc. from Cairo University and a Ph.d. from Rice University. He has held positions at Chalmers University, University of Oregon, Microsoft Research, University of Genova, and Indiana University. Amr is married with four children: Khalid, Amira, Nadia, and Zayd.
Hilmi Demir received his BA and MA in Philosophy from Bogazici University in Turkey. In 2000, he came to Bloomington in order to get his Ph.D. in Philosophy and Cognitive Science. He has been at IU since then as a Chancellor's fellow. He teaches Philosophy and Cognitive Science courses.
We hope to see you and share your questions and insights! The panel will be followed by a reception as always.

Bloomington Muslim Group's Open Discussion on Islam from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. in Room 1C of the Monroe County Public Library.
It is always a puzzling question for most of us how are we supposed to live as believers in God? Yes, we all know that we have to do good deeds, but why do we have to believe in God or in the life after death in order to be good persons? Even more, why do we have to follow the rules of certain religions?
Strangely enough, the most important practice of Islam is to declare one's faith with the motto, "I witness that there is no deity other than God, and I also witness that Muhammad is His servant and His messenger".
Do you think it is enough to say this phrase once in one's life to declare her/his faith in Islam? Or, is s/he expected to live throughout her/his life with this motto? How can a declaration of faith be "a practical side of religion"? Isn't it faith, rather than putting one's faith into practice?
Isn't that exciting to bring down one's faith into his/her daily life and convert the entire life into a living faith?

CROP Walk is sponsored by Church World Service, a cooperative ministry of 36 Protestant, Orthodox and Anglican denominations. CWS provides sustainable self-help and development, disaster relief and refugee assistance in more than 80 countries worldwide.
CROP Walk raises awareness and money for hunger issues right here in our own community and around the world. In Bloomington, previous Walks have raised over $15,000 for this worthy cause. Twenty-five percent of the money raised stays in Monroe County and is divided equally between Community Kitchen, Hoosier Hills Food Bank, Monroe County United Ministries and Mother Hubbard's Cupboard.
The remaining money is distributed by CWS in the United States and other parts of the world where, among other things, it will provide food for local food programs, family shelter kits and emergency food parcels for displaced and refugee Afghan families, and food, educational supplies and medicine for women living with HIV/AIDS in Tanzania.
Last year's Monroe County CROP Walk raised $9,454.23 of the Indiana Kentucky Region's total of $435,573.12.

Bloomington Early Music Group Meeting at 7:00 p.m. in Heritage Hall
The Indiana University Muslim Students Union invites participation in its annual "Fast-a-thon" during Ramadan. Joining Muslim campus groups across the country in an effort to address issues of hunger, the IU MSU is looking for non-Muslim students willing to "go hungry for a day so someone else won't have to." Bloomington businesses have agreed to donate to the Community Kitchen based on the number of students who participate in the October 26th fast.
Fasting, going without food and drink from dawn to sunset, is the hallmark of the Muslim month of spiritual rededication. Fast-a-thon participants would attempt to fast the day of October 26th and are invited to break their fast at a MSU-provided-dinner that night, 6:00 p.m. in the Forest Greenleaf Cafeteria. Help us make the event even more successful than last year, when over 200 students participated and over 600 dollars were raised!
