"The Children of Abraham: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam Pre-and- Post 9/11"
For all of their differences, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam claim a common origin in the biblical patriarch Abraham and join one another in affirming the religious ideals of universal peace and harmony. Ours is not a peaceful time, though, in part because some of the most passionate adherents of the three great monotheistic religions have become advocates of extreme measures enacted in the name of faith. While many millions of people properly look to religion as a key source of moral truth and ethical guidance, others use religious belief to sanction immoral and unethical conduct of the most destructive kind. The violent potential of "sacred causes" was made horribly graphic by the events of 9/11, but this potential resides within all world religions and needs to be acknowledged and understood.
To gain a more intimate understanding of the three Abrahamic religions—of what unites and what divides them a special forum will be held at Beth Shalom Synagogue on Sunday evening, September 11, beginning at 7:30 p.m.
The public is cordially invited to attend. Presentations on Judaism, Christianity, and Islam will be made by three outstanding scholars of Indiana University—Steven Weitzman, Ellen Muehlberger, and Kevin Jaques. The discussion that follows will be open to participation by all who attend.
