Reading Camp "Cadets" at Lutheran Hills

Reading Camp is an initiative by the Indiana-Kentucky Synod designed to give tools and hope for a better future to 4th and 5th graders lagging behind their peers in reading skills. Professional teachers conduct the program, assisted by volunteer "Cadets," older high school and college students (ages 17-22) from synod congregations with an interest in elementary education. "Cadets" work with the teachers they are partnered with for 3 hours each morning and interact with students throughout the day on general camp activities, including leading "Read Aloud" story sessions each evening. Contact Reading Camp Director, Cleo Swager (260) 456-3168 for more information and a special application packet. No Cost.

Retired's Group Event

Meet in the St. Thomas parking lot at 4:30 p.m. to carpool to dinner and then to the Bloomington Community Band concert at McCormick's Creek State Park. Please RSVP to Jane Warner.

The Bloomington Community Band invites all members of St. Thomas to a very special 30th anniversary concert at the McCormick's Creek State Park Amphitheater at 7:30 p.m. Parking is available in the area and the newly remodeled therater is easily accessible. The concert is free: park admission fees will apply. There are benches for seating; however a lawn chair would add to your comfort. The concert will not only celebrate the Bloomington Community Band's birthday, but recognize member of the band and the people of St. Thomas for their years of contribution and support. Many members of our church have been participants throughtout the years. It would be nice to have a sizable group there to represent St. Thomas. Sitting in with the band will be Tony Sadlon, a senior at IU and an outstanding trumpeter. Don't forget this is the night of the famous kazoo feature. In case of inclement weather at the park, the concert would be cancelled.

A word about the dance at today's offering

Beginning with roots in Old Testament traditions, dance is a beautiful but often overlooked part of Christianity. As an integral part of religion all through the world, it has been present since the early days of the Church. Today it is most often used as a joyous celebration of worship, but has also been used as a medium to celebrate holidays, provide community togetherness, and to mourn death. Today's offertory is for all the children in the world who suffer. Originally choreographed to remember the children of the Holocaust, it is a call for prayer and a time to reflect on the lives of children who are jeopardized by violence, poverty, illness and strife.

"You have turned my mourning into dancing" Psalm 30: 11

Hannah Fidler, age 13, is a student in the IU Pre-College Ballet Program and will be a freshman at Bloomington High School North. Ashley Howell, age 13, is a student in the IU Pre-College String Academy and is home-schooled.
