The Martyrs of Japan, 1597 (Liturgical Color: Red)

Saturday February 6, 2010

February 7, 2010

Fifth Sunday After the Epiphany (Liturgical Color: Green)

I bow down toward your holy temple and give thanks to your name for your steadfast love and your faithfulness; for you have exalted your name and your word above everything. (Psalm 138: 2)
I bow down toward your holy temple and give thanks to your name for your steadfast love and your faithfulness; for you have exalted your name and your word above everything. (Psalm 138: 2)
We welcome Rev. Arnie Pierson, pastor of St. Thomas from 1973-1981, who is the guest homilist of our third celebration today in which we focus on hour history and tradition of fine music and education. This date recognizes the dedication of the pipe organ on February 7, 1999.
In celebration of St. Thomas' 50 year tradition of music, today's liturgy is featuring Franz Joseph Haydn's Missa brevis in F Major. This setting of the Ordinary of the Mass (Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, Agnus Dei) is Haydn's first known setting. The term missa brevis means literally "brief mass". This setting is indeed short, a mere 12 minutes in totals, in comparison to the most popular settings that range from 45 to 80 minutes long.
Much of Haydn's music is characterized by an overt optimism. While many composers exploit the dark and penitent aspects of much of the texts, Haydn find the joy nad comfort to be had in the words of the liturgy and ond of the major tenets of the Christianity, grace. As you listen to those aspects of the liturgy in which you usually participate, we encourage you to reflect on the words of the Mass that we say so often and perhaps don't always hear.
Worship at 8:30 a.m.

A special gift will be presented to St. Thomas Church by the SCS children at the 11:00 service.

The Sunday School classes have been working together on a very special project. The children (Godly Play to 6th grade) have brainstormed, researched, molded, painted, glued, and paper machid for several weeks now. Throughout the project, the children explored the birth of Jesus, who was involved, why the event was so important, and how Jesus wants us to love and serve others. We are happy to announce that the kids are ready to present the finished product as a gift to the congregation! Please join us at the 11:00 a.m. service for this special presentation.

Ash Wednesday (Liturgical Color: Black)

Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions. (Psalm 51: 1)

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent with ash on our foreheads. This cross echoes our baptismal anointing, when we were buried with Christ. The ash is a reminder of our mortality, but because our death is now in Christ, our endings are beginnings. The Lenten disciplines of acts of kindness, prayer, and fasting are tools of discipleship that can lead us to renewal as we bury all that is holding us back from being truly alive.
