All of the organ music today is based on the ancient Gregorian chant melody, "Veni, Creator Spiritus", or "Come Holy Ghost". The melody dates from around the 9th century and its authorship is attributed to the Frankish Benedictine monk, Rhabanus Maurus, who late became a German archbishop. Martin Luther included the German translation of the text (Komm, Gott Schöpfer) in his 1543 hymbook, Geistliche Lieder. Both the chant and metricized versions are included in the ELW, and can be found at numbers 577 and 578.

Why do we celebrate Trinity Sunday?

The first Sunday after Pentecost has come to be known in many western liturgical churches as Trinity Sunday. It is one of the few observations in the church year that honors an idea or a reality, but not an actual event or individual. One way to understand the mystery of the Trinity is to begin with the Holy Spirit and work in reverse; the Holy Spirit leads us to Jesus Christ, the son, who shows us what the Father is like. The term "Trinity" never appears in the Bible; it was probably first used by the early theologian Tertullian (160-225 A.D.) to describe the co-existence of the three persons of God as described in the New Teastament. Those of us who have ever witnessed a baptism are familiar with the Trinitarian baptismal formula of "Father, Son, and Holy Ghost" found in Matthew 28: 19. In the Augsburg Confession of 1530, one of the primary documents of the Lutheran faith, we find written in the first article: "there is one divine essence which is called and which is God, eternal, incorporated, indivisible, of infinite power, wisdom and goodness, the maker and preserver of all things, visible and invisible. Yet there are three persons, of the same essence and power, who are also co-eternal: the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit". [condensed from elca.org and Sundays and Seasons.
