Baltimore, July 17, 2003 — U.S. Treasury Secretary John Snow will see a "blizzard" of postcards calling for debt relief if enough readers heed a call for action in the latest Lutheran World Relief advocacy bulletin. The debt relief being recommended to Snow and the U.S. Administration would free up monies for health care and schooling in impoverished nations, building on a first round of relief enacted three years ago.
Other action items in the bulletin include Colombia and landmines. For Colombia, LWR urges constituents to ask their Members of Congress to reduce military aid to the violence-riddled Latin American country and provide more support for people displaced by conflict. In the case of landmines, the U.S. Government is urged to sign the landmine ban treaty, joining the 140 countries that have already done so.
