Baltimore, July 17, 2003 — Lutheran World Relief is inviting friends and supporters to celebrate the first 1,000 bricks - engraved in honor of parish groups, loved ones and former staff - in the plaza of its Baltimore headquarters.

A re-dedication day for the Good Samaritan Quilt Plaza on September 27, 2003, will include time for fellowship, learning and devotions. Special guest speaker will be Dr. Vincent Peters, a Minnesota educator and LWR board member who as a boy in India received a quilt that had come from LWR.

Workshops will include armchair travel to places where LWR school kits, health kits, clothing and kits go, such as Iraq, and where the coffee, chocolate and handcrafts in LWR's fair trade projects originate, such as Tanzania.

The Quilt Plaza carries a pattern known as "Many Trips Around the World." Each donated brick provides enough money to ship 250 quilts to people in need overseas, $500. The 1,000 bricks given so far represent half a million dollars of shipping funds. LWR is also accepting photographs of parish project groups for a 'Faith in Action' photo gallery at the event.
