Baltimore, August 25, 2003 — LWR is hosting two study visits to Nicaragua in January and February, 2004 - one especially for college and university students and faculty who are looking for a social justice service learning project. Participants will see first hand the roots of the LWR Coffee Project, a program that educates Lutherans about the social justice issues around the coffee industry and encourages people to purchase coffee that has been fairly traded. Participants will take part in discussions with local economists, historians, Lutheran church leaders, and LWR staff and partners. They'll also participate in the harvest and stay in the homes of coffee farmers for an up-close experience.
The trips are being planned in coordination with the Augsburg Center for Global Education and LWR Coffee Project partner Equal Exchange. For more information, visit www.lwr.org/study or contact LWR's study visit manager, Terri Speirs: e-mail tspeirs@lwr.org, phone 651-523-1630.
