Monroe County United Ministries (MCUM) opened in early 1940 as a low-income daycare. Known until 1970 as the Christian Center, United Ministries has grown and changed to meet and keep up with need in the Monroe County community. MCUM is dedicated to reducing the impact of poverty in our community and, to that end, we look beyond the services we offer to work collaboratively with other organizations in an effort the find the best solutions for our clients.
MCUM policy is one of non-discrimination for all our employees and program participants.
Although most MCUM funding comes from local organizations and individuals, we do receive some funding through Community Development Block Grants, Child Care Development Fund (CCDF), the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP), FEMA's Emergency Food and Shelter Program, and the United Way.
The Emergency Services Program provides short-term assistance to families and individuals in crisis. This program includes one of the largest food pantries in the county, a clothing service operated in conjunction with Opportunity House, a "cleaning closet" that provides cleaning and hygiene supplies and a financial assistance program that can cover rent or utility payments to prevent disconnects or eviction. All four components are supported largely through financial donations as well as donations of food, clothing, household supplies, cleaning products and hygiene items.
We have two programs which offer the highest quality subsidized childcare to low-income families with working parents. Because we require parents to work fulltime, we keep our doors open from 6:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. to accommodate different daytime schedules. Periodic childcare inspections always award us very high marks for both quality and nutrition.
Our licensed and accredited Childcare Program for 2 to 6 year olds stimulates mental, physical, social and emotional development, challenges the children and provides a healthy and nurturing environment.
For children aged 6 to 10, our Summer camp offers a full-day program during the schools' summer vacation. Activities include arts and crafts, music, computers, basketball and swimming, as well as a number of field trips to local parks, farms, and museums.
There are a number of ways to help MCUM help others: most of its food and funding, and all of its clothing come directly from the local community. MCUM's work is sustained through gifts of money, time, and talent. If you would like to support MCUM financially, or through donations of time or food, you can get in touch at:
